Google Crawl Rate for A Simple Cell

November 2, 2008 · 1 Comment

Prior to my new design, this domain has been wallowing in the internet wasteland for a couple of years. I used it for some test sites — which in hindsight probably wasn’t a good idea. All Google knew about domain was that it contained a bunch of lorem ipsums, and had a generic description “Personal blog.” Given the circumstances of the launch, I thought it would be interesting to document the amount of time it took for Google to update its information about this site. The timeline is as follows:

  • Oct. 26: New home page.
  • Oct. 27: Sitemap submitted to Google.
  • Oct. 28: Updated meta tags with description.
  • Oct. 31: Site linked by several design sites.
  • Nov. 1: Google updated site information in Webmaster Tools, updated search description with incorrect text (footer text of the site, instead of text in meta description).
  • Nov. 2: Google updated search description with correct text.

I was somewhat disappointed that it took Google almost a week to update my site information in Webmaster Tools, but it should be noted that the update came after links from several prominent sites (thanks!). Now I’m no SEO expert, but I do know quality links have everything to do with how much Google pays attention to your site. This timeline should only serve as an example, as circumstances vary across different sites.
